Earlier last month, Maybelline launched a whopping 30 new products to their Australian line. And you all know me at this point, where there are new Maybelline launches, there has to be a new mascara amongst the goodies. In this case, the Colossal Bubble Mascara. I immediately got my hands on it and went straight into reviewing it for you all (sorry for those who were looking forward to the Revlon Tubing Mascara review). So, did this make my lashes float away? Or did the bubble burst? Let’s get into it!

MAYBELLINE COLOSSAL BUBBLE MASCARA – $27.99 – chemistwarehouse.com.au

Starting with the packaging, the Colossal Bubble Mascara is housed in a standard, tube style package. The tube is butter yellow and has chrome pink detail. Looking at it amongst Maybelline’s other mascara’s, especially those in the Colossal line, it is a different feel and vibe. It’s definitely a different shade of yellow. And it does evoke a feeling of lightness, if that makes sense. The Colossal Bubble Mascara contains 10ml of product.

The wand for the Colossal Bubble Mascara is a fairly standard, straight wand with firm synthetic fibers that swirl around the wand. The bristles start off long and shorten towards the tip. I did notice that there is quite a bit of space between the bristles. Which would make sense as this is touted as a separating and lifting mascara. The space between the bristles makes it easier to separate the lashes effectively.

The formula for the Colossal Bubble Mascara is fairly standard as well. There are no hugely noteworthy lash loving ingredients in this formula that I can see. I did notice Kaolin, which should help with volumising. But that’s probably it. One thing I did notice early on, and you can see it in the picture, is that the formula can get a little thick and clumpy in some spots. Definitely something to note.

First impressions of this mascara absolutely blew me away! This is easily one of the best separating mascaras I’ve tried in a very long time. This wand found lashes that I didn’t even know I had. And the tip allowed me to reach those tiny inner corner lashes with ease. I was also super impressed with the amount of lift that I got. Mostly because of how volumising this formula was. It feels super light on the lashes. I did get a little bit of clump action early on. But I was able to comb them out. Overall, yeah, pretty stoked to start…

Which is why I was so devastated when I did the wear test. I let out an audible ‘no’ in the middle of Kmart when I saw that this was transferring under my eyes the first time I wore it. The transfer isn’t enough to be full smudge city, but it is enough for my mum to notice it at work. I will point out that when the above wear test pictures were taken, it was a pretty cold day. The transfer is notably worse when it’s warmer. I also, predictably, lost some of that lovely lift that I got. However, that’s almost a given with me. So I won’t hold that against it. Fortunately, it’s a pretty easy formula to remove. A little oil cleanser takes the lot of well.
All in all, I do have to give a tentative thumbs down to the Colossal Bubble Mascara. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it either. Maybe it’s best that you don’t necessarily take my word for this one. I do have a few friends that have already reviewed this mascara and it wore better for them. And I have to admit, I still love the effect that it gave to my lashes. Maybe count this in the ‘try for yourself’ column. But for the love of God, don’t pay full price for it. Have you tried the Maybelline Colossal Bubble Mascara? Let me know in the comments.
Cheers and love
