Emmie Reviews – Swing And A Miss: The Fragrances That Disappointed Me

Posted on August 19, 2025August 18, 2025 by emmiesbeautylifeadmin

Over the last seven years of running Emmie’s Beauty Life, I have endeavored to make this a space of love and positivity. But I also believe it’s equally as important to share the negative side wherever necessary. I don’t do this to shame or harass (lord knows I’m not big enough to make that much of an impact), but to simply share my thoughts and feelings about a particular product. And at the moment, I’ve had three fragrances come across my desk that sadly didn’t work out for me. Two of these are newer launches and the other is an extremely viral fave that I fear might get me cancelled from the FragranceTok scene. Let’s get into it!

KAYALI FLEUR MAJESTY ROSE ROYALE 31 – $52.00 for 10ml
NOTES: Top – Pear, Peach, Mandarin, Orange. Middle – Rose, Peony, Violet, Magnolia. Base – Musk, Vanilla, Praline, Ambrox Super, Vetiver
My love for Kayali and Mona Kattan is famous. I’ve tried almost the entire Kayali range at this point. And while I’ll always have a preference for Kayali’s more gourmand leaning fragrances, perfumes such as Deja Vu, Sweet Diamond, and Maldives In A Bottle shows that there are floral heavy fragrances in the Kayali line that I do love. All that to say, I was still excited to try Fleur Majesty despite the fact that Rose is one of my least favourite fragrance notes. I’ve grown up around roses my whole life. I know what they are supposed to smell like. And Fleur Majesty smells exactly like the oil burners my mum use to have around the house when I was a kid. I had hoped the the fruity top notes would balance out the Rose. But for me, it’s very Rose heavy with a hint of Musk and it’s just too much. Even my mum, who loves rose fragrances, didn’t like this one. I eagerly await what Kayali has coming next. But this was a pass for me.

THE 7 VIRTUES CLEMENTINE DREAM – $46.00 for 10ml
NOTES: Top – Clementine, Black Currant. Middle – Magnolia. Base – Vanilla.
When I saw that The 7 Virtues was bringing out a Citrus Vanilla based fragrance, I literally thought my prayers were going to be answered. I’ll forever have a soft spot in my heart for sweet citrusy fragrances. And the notes for Clementine Dream were right up my alley. So imagine my heartbreak when I spritzed this onto my skin and immediately said ‘oh no!’. While I do get that sweetness from the vanilla and black currant, the main overriding smell I get is sharp, zesty citrus as opposed to the sweet, juicy citrus that I thought I would get. It reminds me of a citrus oil more than anything else (which makes sense when you look at the packaging and see that mandarin oil is one of the main components). Which does give it a more adult, sophisticated quality. For me though, the hunt for my dream creamsicle fragrance continues.

COMMODITY MILK EXPRESSIVE – $58.00 for 10ml
NOTES: Top – Milk. Middle – Marshmallow, Natural Musk Base – Mahogany, Tonka Bean.
You all know by this point that I am 100% a gourmand girly. The sweeter, the sugary, the fluffier, the better. And whenever I go onto other gourmand lovers pages, the number one recommendation I see is Commodity Milk. The love for this fragrance online cannot be overstated. Heck, Milk’s biggest ride or die, Emma (Perfumerism on TikTok), is releasing her own updated version of Milk in a few weeks. So, naturally, I had to try it for myself. And for me? 404: sweet not found. I do not understand the hype around this at all. All I get from Milk is, well, milk. It’s a deeply unpleasant scent. And I don’t pick up on any of the sweet softness from the Marshmallow or the Tonka Bean. I’ve since learned that Juice Expressive is probably more my speed from Commodity. And I do plan on picking up the 10ml at some stage. But if anyone has any good marshmallow fragrance recommendations, please let me know.

And that is a wrap! I know it’s never fun to talk about the negatives. But I really had to get these off my chest. As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments. And send over your fragrance recommendations. I’m always on the hunt for something new to try!

Cheers and love
