It’s been a few months since my last mascara round up. But now I’ve used enough new ones to bring this back! This time though, I’m doing things a little differently. As a couple of these mascaras are newer to the market, this round up will be more of an overall break down as opposed to what I was doing before. Also, just for a bit of fun, I’ll be ranking the mascaras from worst to best. So, if you want to know my thoughts on the mascaras I’ve been using lately, just keep reading!
TOO FACED BETTER THAN SEX MASCARA – $33.00 – mecca.com.au
Yeah, yeah, I know. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to try Better Than Sex. Probably one of the most famous higher end mascaras on the market today. This is one of those either you love it or loathe it products and well, put me in the loathe it camp because I hated it!
The issue is three fold for me. Firstly, while the wand is admitted one I generally like, its really big and gets in the way when I use it. As a result, I always end up with mascara on my eyelid whenever I use it. Secondly, it transfers. Normally, I would give a mascara that transfers a pass because it’s pretty common with me, but this transfers and smudges within the first hour! For a high end mascara, that’s pretty unacceptable in my opinion.
Finally, and to be frank, the deal breaker, it does nothing special for me. There are drug store mascaras that are half the price that give me better results. I’m ultimately glad that I’ve tried it, but I won’t be buying it again.
L’OREAL UNLIMITED MASCARA – $29.95 – priceline.com.au
I’ve generally had pretty good luck when it comes to L’Oreal mascaras over the years. With the Paradise Extatic and the Million Volume Lashes being two of my favourites from them. So I had high hopes for this one. Fortunately, this is more of the same.
Normally with these mascara round ups, I don’t go into that much detail when it comes to packaging, but this one is really unusual. To me, it almost reminiscent of a genie bottle in it’s shape. The other big gimmick is the ‘flexible wand’ where the handle can be cranked up to 90 degrees. I’ve seen this before in other mascaras (the Givenchy Noir Interdit mascara springs to mind). Do I think it’s gimmicky? Yes. Did I utilise it? Also yes.
I also liked the actual brush quite a bit. It is a rubberised cone shaped wand that made it really easy to get into the corners of my lashes. The formula is pitch black and quite thick as well. It definitely did a good job at lengthening and volumising, but if I went too heavy handed with it, I could easily go to spider lash territory. It did smudge under my eyes, but it wasn’t terrible and it’s not doing it as much now that the formula is drying out a bit. Finally, it’s very easy to remove. I would buy this mascara again, but I might wait for a sale (which should be pretty often).
SMASHBOX SUPER FAN MASCARA – $27.00 – mecca.com.au
Well, colour me very surprised! This mascara came out early last year and I don’t recall that many people talking about it. So when I got it as a freebie and used it for the first time, I really didn’t have any expectations from it. And wow am I impressed by it!
The brush is one I wouldn’t normally go for. With it having more of an ovular shape. But the tip is nice and fine, so I’m able to reach my inner corner lashes pretty easily. The bristles are nicely spaced apart as well so it’s a very separating mascara. But the formula is light and black enough that I really noticed just how much lift my lashes had! If you like a curl to your lashes, this mascara is where it’s at!
I’ve worn it now for the last week and I’ve been extremely impressed by this mascara. It doesn’t flake or smudge (given how light the formula feels, this isn’t surprising). It is a little hard to remove, you do need to use an oil based cleanser. But other than that, I really love this one and it might be a new favourite for me!
And that’s my mascara round up! I’ve found some new favourites in this group and one that I’ll be avoiding from now on! Have you tried any of these mascaras? Let me know down below. And as always, let me know what mascara you want to see in a future Mascara Round Up!
Cheers and love

I hate the Too Faced foundation for that exact reason – it smudges like crazy! I understand why people love it, it makes lashes look amazing but god the smudging is insane! I am going to have to try that Smashbox one next.

I discovered while writing this that the Smashbox mini is available for sale (I got it as a gift with purchase). It’s not that badly priced either.
I really want to try the smash box one after reading your review! I hate mascara transfer so would have had the same issue with the Too Faced one xx

I was so disappointed too. I have a high tolerance for smudging (I live in a hot climate), but it did it so quickly!
