Two Maybelline mascara reviews in the same year? We really do live in blessed times. That’s right, we are talking about the all new Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky Tubes Mascara. Which launched back in July to all of our surprise (the Aussie drugstore drops have been improving). As you may remember, the original Sky High Mascara I would count amongst my top two all time favourite mascaras. And knowing how much my friends have been loving this one online, let’s just say the stakes are pretty high. I’ve spent the last few weeks using it behind the scenes. And I have a ton of thoughts. So, let’s get into this review!

MAYBELLINE LASH SENSATIONAL SKY TUBES MASCARA – $28.99 – chemistwarehouse.com.au

Kicking us off with the packaging, the Sky Tubes Mascara is housed in the same tube style packaging as most of the mascaras in the Lash Sensational line. The millennial pink is still there in accent form. But the tube itself is a chrome silver. And the pink ridges give a stacking effect. There is also black detail on the tube itself. It does fit in nicely along the rest of the Lash Sensational range, while still being it’s own thing. The Sky Tubes Mascara contains 7ml of product,

The wand for the Sky Tubes Mascara is, on the surface, one that I’ve seen before. The long, conical shape is a popular choice for tubing mascaras (why, I have no idea). The bristles are a pyramid shape. Wider at the base and narrowing at the tip. Notably, they are shorter than I would expect, but still equal in length. There is also a sphere tip of smaller bristles which comes in handy for reaching the smaller inner corner lashes.

Once again, we are in tubing mascara territory. And one thing I noted immediately was how lightweight this formula was. It’s a very good layering formula as you can easily build it up without your lashes ever getting weighed down. Also noteworthy is that this is a vegan formula. Which I’m pretty certain is a first for Maybelline. And it’s loaded with with lash conditioning ingredients like Shea Butter and Castor Oil to held nourish and repair your lashes over repeat wears. Lastly, as always, the formula is deep and rich with the black pigment. Maybelline has never steered me wrong there.

Like I just mentioned before, the Sky Tubes Mascara was, for me, an excellent layering mascara. I used two coats to get the effect I had on my lashes. And I won’t lie, I was pretty dang impressed. The length was definitely noticeable. But what got me even more was how separated and defined my lashes were. They aren’t plugging this mascara as a ‘full fan effect’. though they probably should be. You could see every single one of my lashes coated in product. I didn’t have any clumping, or my lashes wanting to stick together. Overall, I was very happy.

But that gets us, once again, to the wear test. And that’s where the issues became more noticeable. Right off the bat, this formula flakes on me. Quite a bit, actually. Which is a shame because the fact that this is supposed to be a flake free formula is one of the selling points. I also saw a noticeable droop to my lashes throughout the day. The lift I got sadly didn’t hold. Other than that, I had no transfer or smudging. But again, tubing mascara. I would be horrified if I did.
Again, this is way more negative than I thought this was going to be (can you tell my period is about to start?). While I do overall recommend the Maybelline Sky Tubes Mascara, I wouldn’t call it an enthusiastic recommendation. I certainly don’t like it more than the Sky High. But I like it more than the Body Mascara. If you spot it half off, say give it a go. But don’t expect miracles. Have you tried the Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky Tubes Mascara? Let me know in the comments.
Cheers and love
