Ever since Tarte dropped their legendary Shape Tape concealer back in 2016, pretty much every single makeup brand has been trying to bring out the next best thing. And while some have come close, it seemed that no one was unseating Shape Tape. So I was very surprised to see how many people were excited when ELF Cosmetics brought out their own long wear concealer. And even more surprised when the positive reviews started rolling in. So when it became available here in Australia, I quickly picked it up and put it to the test. So if you want to know if the Camo concealer has dethroned the king, just keep reading.
ELF COSMETICS 16hr CAMO CONCEALER – $15.00 – elfcosmetics.com.au
Starting with the packaging, and to be honest, there isn’t much to talk about. It’s a basic acrylic tube with a black handled wand. The applicator is a rather sizeable doe foot style with a reservoir that hold extra product. The Camo concealer is cruelty free, vegan and contains 6ml of product, which is fairly standard for a drugstore concealer.
There are 18 shades in this concealer line ranging from Fair Rose to Rich Ebony. So this is a concealer that covers quite a few bases. I will note though that for some reason, only nine of the shades are available in Australia and they all lean on the fair to medium side. This is disappointing that a brand is limiting it’s shade range here and I do hope that this changes in the future.
Despite this concealer being available to purchase in store (I got mine from Kmart), I was unable to swatch it and I did have to do some guess work to figure out what shade would suit me. In the end, I settled on Medium Peach, which is described as a medium with cool, peach overtones. Luckily for me, this is a pretty decent match for both makeup and no makeup days.
When I first applied it, I noticed that it was a runnier consistency than other concealers that I’ve tried. It’s by no means watery, but it’s not as thick as say Shape Tape is. There is no strong fragrance with this concealer either, which is a relief. And you get a lot of product on the wand so you have to be careful where and how you place it.
The other thing I quickly learned is that this is best blended out with your fingers. I start the blend out with either my sponge or my concealer brush, but I always finish it with my fingers to get it looking seamless. I find that this is the technique that works best for me.
I tried several different ways of setting this concealer as well and it didn’t perform any differently when I used different loose or pressed setting powders. Baking the concealer with a loose setting powder did help somewhat with the longevity but honestly, it didn’t make much difference.
The concealer is described to have a matte finish and I would have to agree. Where I would argue however is the full coverage claim. It’s definitely one of the highest coverage concealers I’ve used from the drugstore, but I wouldn’t personally call it full-full coverage. It looks almost natural, which I guess is a good thing. What it does do a really good job of is smoothing out my lines and brightening up the area overall.
I wore this concealer for well over 10 hours most days and overall, it performed pretty well. It did do a great job of concealing my under eye area and generally brightening my face. I will concede that I noticed it creasing a little bit around the 5 hour mark. Though I’m willing to chalk that up to me being a 30 year old woman because pretty much all concealers crease a little bit on me. Gently running a powdered sponge over the under eye area did sort it out and it lasted well throughout the rest of the day.
So, after all that, I do recommend the Camo Concealer. Is it as good as Shape Tape? Probably not. But it’s such a good concealer in it’s own right and the price can’t be beat! If you can find a shade that works for you, I say go for it! Have you tried the ELF Cosmetics Camo Concealer? Let me know down below!
