Emmie Reviews – Mecca Max Selfie Skin 2 in 1 Foundation And Concealer

As a brand, Mecca Max has really been impressing me as of late with their powdered products. The Beauty Queen and Desert Queen palettes are definite highlights from them. But it had recently occurred to me that I haven’t tried any of their cream or liquid products. So it was dang good timing that they released their new Selfie Skin Foundation and Concealer. Which I quickly scooped up and have been putting to the test. So, if you want to know how the new Selfie Skin foundation clicks with me? Just keep reading!

Starting with the packaging, and once again, it’s a plastic tube with a pump attached. It’s actually quite small and slim in size as well, so it would be a good option for travel. Much like the rest of the Mecca Max line, the Selfie Skin Foundation is Vegan, Cruelty Free and it contains 30ml of product. Which is fairly standard and not too bad for the price.

The Selfie Skin Foundation has 20 shades in it’s line. Which on the surface sounds disappointing, but when you look at all the shades, I believe they have done quite well. They have separated them into four different shade families (Light, Medium, Tan and Deep). And each shade family has five shades with different undertones (in this case, Warm, Cool and Neutral). So this is a foundation that could easily accommodate a lot of different people. Having said that, I wouldn’t be at all shocked if Mecca Max expanded the shade range at a later date.

When it came to me choosing my shade, I took the super risky choice of picking it with no reference point. Fortunately the shade I ended up with (LN4 – Beige) is a pretty spot on match for me. But as always, I do recommend going in store if you can and getting properly shade matched as to avoid buying the wrong shade.

When I first pumped the foundation out, I noticed that the formula wasn’t as thick as a lot of other high coverage foundations that I’ve tried. Though it was by no means runny. It held it’s shape really well and it wasn’t too difficult to dab onto my face. The Mecca Max page says that it can easily be applied with either your fingers, a brush or a sponge. I tried all three methods and they all work well. I do have a preference to the finish my sponge gives but I have seen some people say that they have found it difficult to blend this out with a sponge. So a little bit of experimentation may be needed to find the best method for you.

I easily managed to get a medium coverage with only one pump of foundation. And despite the fact that Mecca Max says that this is a full coverage foundation, I honestly prefer the medium coverage. This isn’t like other high coverage foundations where a little goes a long way. I found I was using a lot of foundation (2-3 pumps) to get to a full coverage. And on me, I personally wasn’t a fan. If I did want a little extra coverage, I would use it more as a spot concealer and target the areas where I wanted extra coverage.

As for the finish, on me personally, I found it was more of a natural finish that leaned a little bit on the matte side. I loved they way it looks though and to me, it just looked like my skin but better.

As I always do, I tried this foundation with a wide array of primers (It wasn’t until I sat down to write this up that I discovered Mecca Max did release a primer to go with this foundation). And my favourite combo was mixing a good gripping primer around the outside perimeter and a more pore filling primer in the center. That combo got me the best possible wear out of this foundation.

It was through further experimentation that I actually found that my more mattifying primers didn’t mix well with this foundation for me. This might be because my skin does lean more dry these days. But I had real issues with this foundation breaking apart when I used a more matte primer.

I’ve now worn this foundation multiple times for 10+ hours and in different weather conditions (gotta love Queensland weather). I found that it does last really well for the most part. I did find that I did have to powder around my nose and chin at the 5-6 hour mark. But my cheeks and forehead held up ok. It doesn’t fade too much or sink into my pores, but it does want to crack in my smile lines. Which is probably the biggest negative I could give it. But that’s more of an age thing and thankfully, I can easily fix it by running a slightly powdered sponge over those spots.

All in all, I’m giving the Selfie Skin Foundation a big ole thumbs up. I really like the finish, it has good lasting power and the price is pretty fantastic for a higher end foundation. Have you tried the Selfie Skin Foundation? Let me know in the comments below!
