It’s been more than a minute since I last did a mascara review here. Truth be told, I can’t even remember the last time a mascara launch truly excited me enough to rush out and get it. Then I remembered that the kind folks over at Essence sent me a bunch of goodies a little while ago. One of those products being their brand spanking new 24Ever Defined Volume mascara. And knowing how much you all love my more affordable reviews, I decided to give it a go over the last month. So, if you want to know my thoughts, keep on reading!
ESSENCE 24EVER DEFINED VOLUME MASCARA – $7.00 – priceline.com.au *product sent in PR*
Starting with the packaging (and my goodness, does it feel good to say that), the Defined Volume mascara is housed in a fairly standard, lightweight, black plastic tube. There is some white and purple detail for the writing, but that’s about it really. It’s definitely on the simpler side in comparison to some of Essence’s other mascaras (the Lash Princess springs to mind). But simple isn’t bad in my eyes. The Defined Volume mascara is cruelty free, vegan and contains 12ml of product
The wand is also fairly simple. It’s conical in shape, tapering towards the end and it has natural bristles that are evenly spaced apart. I’ll be the first to admit, this is a much larger brush than what I’m used to using. But I didn’t experience too many issues as far as bumping the wand against my eyelid.
The formula itself surprised me. It’s not quite as black as some of the mascaras I’ve tried in the past. And it’s definitely on the thick side (a common trait for Essence mascaras). But it’s a formula that pairs well with the brush. The natural bristles allow the product to be evenly distributed over the lashes without clumping or looking especially heavy.
Now, I’ve reviewed a few Essence mascaras here in the past. So, I like to think I know what to do when it comes to initial application. And I was quickly proven accurate. The Defined Volume mascara was definitely lacking on that first coat. But when I went in with the second, that’s when I really noticed a difference. Firstly, this layer’s beautifully without feeling crunchy or heavy on the lashes. And while it’s not the most lengthening mascara on the planet. It makes up for it with separation. I got true definition of my lashes with just a touch of natural looking definition to boot.
And now, the wear test! And y’all, we might be onto a winner here! First off all, this is the first Essence mascara that I’ve reviewed that hasn’t flaked on me. Which might be an accomplishment in it’s own right. Surprisingly, this did give a nice lift to my lashes that held on for most of the day. Which was something I didn’t really notice until now. If I could ding it, I will concede that it does transfer on me. Ironically, the transfer is worse on days that I’m not wearing makeup. But as you can see from the above right pic, there is some slight smudging under the eyes. Enough to be noticeable, but not enough to be a total dealbreaker.
So yeah, the Essence 24Ever Defined Volume Mascara gets a pass from me. Is it a game changer? No. But you know what? For $7, you could do a lot worse. And this might be my favourite Essence mascara to date! Have you tried the Essence 24Ever Defined Volume Mascara? Let me know in the comments below!

It’s so affordable too!
I’ve heard great things about Essence mascaras and this one sounds lovely. I don’t think I’ll pick this one up though, as I like a mascara that lengthens. It’s great that this doesn’t flake though xx
