The original Huda Beauty Rose Gold palette would have to be one of my top five favourite palettes of all time. And I was always a little disappointed to see that it was limited edition. So I was more than a little intrigued to see that not only was being bought back permanently, it was also getting a full on makeover! So in the interest of science and curiosity, I grabbed it as soon as it landed in Sephora and put it immediately to work.
HUDA BEAUTY ROSE GOLD REMASTERED – $95.00 – Sephora.com.au
We will start with the packaging, which is easily the biggest change from the original palette. When the original Rose Gold palette came out, a large point of contention was that the packing wasn’t worth the considerably high price tag. This was apparently due to the fact that Huda Kattan, the CEO of Huda Beauty, put the majority of the effort and money into the actual shadows. The updated packaging features a gorgeous head shot of Huda, surrounded by roses (and yes, some of the roses have a tinge of gold on them). Another significant improvement is that this palette has a mirror that takes up almost the entirety of the inside lid. Overall, the packaging does feel a lot more sturdy than the original Rose Gold palette and it’s more in line with the Desert Dusk palette.
The layout has a few subtle changes. Like the original, it contains 18 shadows in rows of six. This time however, the shades are better presented. If you follow the lines in an ‘S’ formation, it flows nicely and that’s something I do like.
I’ll start with the mattes, which were my favourites from the old palette. The bottom row is completely unchanged shade wise, with all six shades remaining from the original palette. The middle row does see a few changes. Bossy, Flamingo and Shy are out and have been replaced with Risque, Doll Face and Demure. All three of the new shades share similarities with the old shades, but there are enough differences to warrant calling them something else. Much to my dismay, Bae has been left out completely. As someone who frequently uses a cream colour to set my eye primer, this is a point in the negative to the new palette.
The feel of the new matte formula is definitely a lot softer than the mattes in the old palette and as a result of that softness, there is more kickback when you dip your brush in. Having said that, when I apply them to the eye, they definitely blend out a lot smoother and they do stay more true to colour. I also noted that the black in this palette is slightly less pigmented than the original palette. This might be due to the fact that this shadow is now designed to be used wet as well as dry.
The shimmers however have had a huge update. The top row is now all metallic shades, with Pink Diamond and Bubbly being the new additions in the second row. Pink Diamond replacing Angelic this time around. The one highlighting shade from the original palette, Moondust has been reformulated completely and is now described as a ‘Pressed Pearl’ shadow.
Even though I was one of the few people who actually liked the metallics in the original palette, I have to admit that the new metallic shades are a significant improvement. They are more creamy, less chunky and are much easier to work with as they can now be applied with a brush as well as a finger. I still prefer using my finger when using these shadows. I also found that they had a lot less fallout and clung to the eye a lot better. You can use the new metallic shades wet, but I don’t because they are punchy on their own. The pressed pearl shadow is also a big step up. It melds with the skin and is definitely more glowy than the shade in the original palette.
Now, the tricky bit. Personally speaking, I don’t regret owning both palettes. Both serve different enough functions to me to justify it. If I were to pick favourites, I would have to say that the remastered version just beats the original. Having said that, if you already own and love the original, I can understand why you might not need to own this. If however, you either missed out on the original or thought that $95 was too high a price to pay for it, this is definitely worth it. The colours are still perfect for day to day wear, the mattes are easy to blend and the metallics are unlike anything I have ever used!
Cheers and Love
