We’ll begin with the packaging. And let’s address the elephant in the room. Yes, the packaging is McoBeauty levels of similar to the original Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara. Right down to the name of the mascara being embossed on the tube. The colour, I will say is different. The Peep Show Mascara tube is more of a lilac rather than BTS’s millennial pink. And while the Peep Show Mascara has the same metal feel, this one is lovely and lightweight. While I do wish the packaging wasn’t so similar, I do like it enough. The Peep Show Mascara is cruelty free, vegan, and contains 12ml of product.
The wand for the Peep Show Mascara uses synthetic hair bristles and has a slight hourglass shape to it. Now, this is where the main difference comes in for me. As I have to admit, I like this brush head much better than Better Than Sex’s brush head. The brush head for Better Than Sex was giant and the bristles too closely packed together, making it hard to get the mascara on the lashes without creating a mess on my eyes. Because this brush head is more spaced out, I have a much easier time combing the product though and getting good separation with my lashes. The bristles also have a slight amount of flex to them. Meaning I can wiggle the brush around more easily, adding volume as well.
Formula wise, this is a pretty standard vegan wax based formula. Very lightweight feeling on the lashes. And while it did have the odd clump, they were very easy to brush out. One thing that did surprise me was that this dried down very quickly. And once it was on, it was quite difficult to remove without an oil based remover. Remember this for later.
This formula also has a few fun benefits for the lashes. The formula is infused with Pro-Vitamin B5, Hyaluronic Acid, and Vitamin E. I’m seeing these ingredients pop up in a lot of mascaras lately because they are supposedly good for strengthening and nourishing the lashes.
First impressions were immediately positive. The volume I got from the Peep Show Mascara was what I noticed right off the bat. My lashes just look thicker and fluffier, without looking too over the top. I was also impressed with the amount of lift and curl I got. Normally I have to sacrifice lift when it comes to more volumising mascaras. I do kind of wish I got a touch more length out of this mascara. But I’m a picky bitch that loves lengthening mascaras.
But now it’s time for the wear test. And as you can see, I had no smudging. Yay! I did, however, have some flaking. Not yay. I will note the flaking as strange, as it only happened on occasions where I had layered this mascara up. In the above picture, I’m wearing two coats (which I do for all of my reviews). The flaking and lack of transfer had me almost convinced this was a tubing mascara (it’s not. There are no copolymer’s in this formula). I suspect that this is a consequence of this formula drying down quickly. Almost like it’s ‘shaking’ the excess off. If you do try this, maybe stick with one coat.
The other nitpick that I had was that I did lose some of that lift. Not the curl though, the curl stayed pretty present on my lashes. Otherwise, I was pretty stoked at how well this did perform. No smudging, no transfer, just full, fluffy lashes.
All in all, I do have to give the Peep Show Mascara a thumbs up and my recommendation. For less than $20, this is a really, really good mascara! Especially if you’re a fan of natural, yet voluminous lashes. Have you tried the DB Cosmetics Peep Show Mascara? Let me know in the comments.
Cheers and love
