As much as I love talking about and reviewing drugstore mascaras, sometimes I do get sucked into the allure and enchantment that is high end/luxury mascara. And it pains me to admit that some of my all time favourites are high end. Besides, someone has to be silly enough to spend that much money to review a mascara. And that person might as well be me!
To wit, the Lancome Monsieur Big Mascara. This is a mascara that has been on the review list for many, many years. Heck, I remember when this launched back in 2017. It was the talk of the YouTube Beauty Community. And I also remember seeing many a yearly favourites video that featured this mascara. It has continued to be a fan favourite to this day. So, let’s see if it holds up to the hype seven years later.

It feels almost silly to start with the packaging. Because it is one of the more iconic mascaras out there. But, for those who aren’t familiar, the Monsieur Big Mascara is housed in a glossy black tube with shiny pink detail. The tube itself is very lightweight. Which surprised me. I did maybe expect the packaging to be a little more lux because of the high price tag. The Monsieur Big Mascara contains 10ml of product.
The wand for the Monsieur Big Mascara is big, fluffy, and uses synthetic fiber bristles. The wand also tapers slightly towards the tip. Which I always like as it makes it easy for me to reach those pesky inner corner lashes. I also like how evenly spaced and flared out the bristles are as that helps the lashes really grip to the wand. It also helps with separation while applying. Best of all though, even though the wand looks big, it’s not so big that when I use it, I’m constantly dinging my eyelid. That didn’t happen at all!
For the first time in a while, we are out of tubing mascara hell. The formula of the Monsieur Big Mascara is pitch black and very creamy. Exactly what I expect from a mascara that touts volume as it’s main selling point. The formula itself is mostly wax based (Paraffin, Carnauba, and Synthetic Beeswax). But there are some polymers to help set the mascara in place. I didn’t notice any major ingredients for lash health. But that’s ok. Not every mascara has to have that.
I mentioned in a previous mascara review that it takes a lot for me to be immediately impressed by a mascara upon first application. But the way my jaw dropped when I did my first coat. The difference was instant. Obviously, the first takeaway from this review is that this might be the most volumising mascara that I’ve reviewed all year. My lashes were so voluminous and long and fluttery. Another notable thing about this mascara was that it picked up on lashes that I didn’t know that I had. The separation was also noteworthy. Again, I have no notes outside of wow.
That brings us to the wear test. And I won’t lie, I kinda thought this is where this praise train would end. Because when I saw how thick and creamy the formula was, I thought this mascara was going to be smudge city. But shockingly, this held on for well over 9 hours without any noticeable smudging, flaking, or transfer. Even the lift droop wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be. Best of all, this was a very easy mascara to remove.
So, the Lancome Monsieur Big Mascara is, to date, the most expensive mascara that I’ve ever reviewed. And I am well aware that that price point is an immediate no for many of you. But this formula is actually incredible, I have no faults with the wear, and it looks so good on the lashes. I have no choice but to give it my recommendation. I bought this on sale at Adore Beauty. And they do sales quite a lot throughout the year. So, if you are ever curious, or in a deep mood to treat yourself, this might be a good pickup. Have you tried the Lancome Monsieur Big Mascara? Let me know in the comments.
Cheers and love
