Longtime readers will know that I’m a huge Maybelline mascara stan. I’ve tried pretty much all of them at this point and it’s my second most reviewed mascara brand on this site. Whenever they release a new one, I am there, with my credit card, ready to purchase. But even I have to admit that the last couple of launches have been on the underwhelming side. So, I did wait to pick up the new Firework Mascara that launched a few months back. But when some of my more trusted blogger friends said that it was actually great, I bit the bullet and placed the order. I’ve spent the last few weeks using it (I even took it on holiday). And I’m ready to share my thoughts. So, let’s get into it!
MAYBELLINE LASH SENSATIONAL FIREWORK MASCARA – $28.99 – chemistwarehouse.com.au
Let’s kickstart this with the packaging. The Firework Mascara is housed in a bright hot pink tube with black and chrome pink detail. The tube itself has ridges, which goes hand in hand with the Firework name. It’s a bolder packaging that I’ve seen for Maybelline. Especially amongst the Lash Sensation line. But that’s what makes it stand out. The Firework Mascara contains 10ml of product.
The brush head for the Firework Mascara is what Maybelline has dubbed this brush their Super Spark Brush. It’s a moulded brush head, straight, slightly tapering towards the tip, with short, evenly spaced bristles. And the idea behind it is that the brush is designed to shoot the lashes up and out. Kinda like a firework. I actually do like this brush. It’s shorter than the Sky High brush. I get a lot less dinging from it. And I love how flexible it is. It’s not a hard rubber, so it’s very comfortable to use.
After a brief break, we are firmly back in tubing mascara territory. 2024 really has been the year for tubing mascaras from the drugstore, hasn’t it? But I did catch some differences with the formula for this one. Namely that the formula had almost a creamy consistency. But once dry, it took on almost like a vinyl shine. And I do notice that on the lashes. It’s very lightweight and forgiving when it comes to layering. And while there is the occasional clump, it’s very easy to comb out.
As I mentioned in the brush description, I knew immediately that I was going to have an easy time using this mascara. Because the bristles are shorter, they cling to the lash very easily. Allowing even product distribution without getting clumpy. And I got pretty instant length from just one coat. Which is to be expected from a tubing mascara. What I didn’t expect was the amount of volume I got. Which I was pretty impressed by.
The other big selling point of this mascara was the lift and separation. And I have to say yes on both fronts. This wand actually picked up new lashes I didn’t even know I had. I also got some serious lift from this mascara. The question then comes, as it always does with tubing mascaras, how long does the lift last?
Let’s answer that question with my wear test. And like I mentioned in my TirTir review, summer is well and truly here up north. But we aren’t looking for smudging with this wear test. We are looking at lift retention and flaking. And after 10 hours of wear, I see no flakes and a rock solid hold on the lift! Now, this hold did have me worried because recently, I’ve had a bad run of trying to remove Maybelline mascaras from my lashes. But this slipped off my lashes with ease in the shower. So, consider that another tick in the yes column.
All in all, the Firework Mascara get an enthusiastic thumbs up and a huge recommendation from me. It’s easily the best drugstore mascara I’ve used this year and the best Maybelline mascara I’ve tried in quite a while. I can actually see this making it’s way into my end of year favourites, I like it that much. Have you tried the Maybelline Firework Mascara? Let me know in the comments below.
Cheers and love
