I know that on the blog, I tend to keep things fun and positive. And that’s because I usually do a lot of my own research before making any new makeup purchase. But sometimes, despite my best efforts, there just some products that don’t work out for me. And that’s what I’ll be talking about today. I’ll be shining a spotlight on five products that disappointed me this year. Some of these were just not for me. And one or two of them were just straight up bad, in my opinion. Disclaimer before I get into it. If these products worked for you, I am legitimately jealous of you. Because they just didn’t for me. Let’s get into it!
NYX CAN’T STOP WON’T STOP FULL COVERAGE FOUNDATION – $32.99 (review here)
My first foundation review of 2022. This one came highly requested from a lot of my fellow bloggers. And I was sincerely looking forward to trying it because I knew that it was a good option for long wear. I hated the feel of this on my skin. It was so dry and clingy, I genuinely struggled to make it to the end of the day wearing it. And it was also difficult to apply as well. This one falls into the ‘not for me’ category because I have a ton of friends who love this foundation. But they have more oily skin than I do.
SUPERGOOP! UNSEEN SUNSCREEN – $63.36
Gosh, this one broke my heart. Because I know how much this is loved online. And I really wanted to love it too. But as soon as I wiped it on my face, I wiped it back off again. I detest the consistency of this sunscreen. It’s that slippery, silicone texture. Which I know a lot of people like or at least tolerate. But I can’t stand it. This will probably get passed onto a sibling or niece in the future as I don’t want it to go to waste.
MAKEUP BY MARIO SOFT POP POWDER BLUSH – $36.00
Mario hit it out of the park with the matte eyeshadow palette. So, I wanted to test out more from the line. And seeing as I’m a blush junkie, this landed in my cart earlier in the year. Now, having used it, I’m forced the ask this question. What happened here? Because those shadows blend like a dream. This blush doesn’t blend at all. I’m not kidding. The first time I used this, I ended up with an admittedly pretty pink splotch on my cheek that wouldn’t budge. And I’ve since tried a few different brushes with this blush. I’ve tried going in with a lighter hand. I just can’t get this to work for me. It’s a shame because the colour is beautiful.
MILK MAKEUP RISE LIFTING + LENGTHENING MASCARA – $46.00 (review here)
Now we are getting into the spicy end of the post. 2022 wasn’t a good year for mascara. But few were as bad as this one from Milk Makeup. I will admit that it did make my lashes look good. Shame it flaked and smudged all over my face along with it. It’s also the most expensive mascara that I tried this year. Which, wow. I still want to try the Kush Mascara next year. But this was a miss.
COLOURPOP COLOUR STIX – $10.53
*Em’s Note* These were purchased prior to my boycotting of Colourpop.
It’s rare for a brand to genuinely make me feel like I truly wasted my money. But I absolutely did with these Colour Stix from Colourpop. The main reason why I even picked them up was because Colourpop was one of the few brands that I knew of that did stick eyeshadows in fun colours like this. Plus, reasonably affordable. But if I wanted to smear wax on my eyelids, I’d use a crayon. These are so firm, it’s difficult to get any colour transfer on the lid. And on the rare occasions that I did, forget about trying to blend them out. By far, one of the worst products I’ve tried in a long time. 100% avoid these like the plague.
Phew, I feel better now! Glad to get that out of my system. But yeah, these were my disappointments of 2022. What beauty product let you down this year? Let me know in the comments.
Cheers and love
Emily xo
